Pit and Fissure sealants are the materials applied on caries susceptible areas of back teeth to prevent tooth decay. They are applied over the hollows (pits) and grooves (fissures) of the back teeth like molars and premolars, and hence the name. Sealants are generally used in children upon eruption of molars and premolars to seal out the areas prone to dental decay. Upon their application, they form a micro-mechanically bonded protective layer over the tooth surface, to cut off caries producing bacteria from getting into tiny hollows and grooves and cause decay.
