Gum disease also referred to as periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums in an initial stage and infection of the bone and supporting tissues that hold the teeth in the sockets, at an advanced stage. Gum disease may be caused by a number of factors like poor oral hygiene, certain medications, smoking, genetic susceptibility, aging etc.
The basic treatment for gum disease is scaling and root planing. It is a non surgical method wherein teeth cleaning is done, including removal off plaque and tartar around the roots.
In some cases, deep cleaning might be required. A gum flap surgery is carried out in these cases, wherein the gum tissue is cut, deep cleaning is done and the tissue is flapped back, sutured and allowed to heal. The major disadvantage of traditional flap surgery is increased bleeding. Other disadvantages are prolonged healing time, swelling and pain.
An alternative to the traditional gum surgery is the Laser gum surgery.
