WHAT IS GUM DEPIGMENTATION?

Gum depigmentation, falling under the Cosmetic Dentistry branch, is removal of black spots or patches from the gum surface caused by melanin or any other factor, by laser or surgical technique.

What causes gum pigmentation?

In the gingival epithelium, cells called melanocytes reside.  The rate of melanocytes is different in different individuals. These cells are responsible for melanin pigmentation, which is seen as black spots or patches on the gum surface.  Certain medications could also result in pigmentation.

What are the techniques employed in Gum Depigmentation?

Basically, two main techniques are employed: Laser ablation and Surgical technique.

LASER ABLATION:

Dental laser targets the melanocytes and ablates them, which results in a reduced production of melanin by melanocytes in the basal layer of gingival epithelium. The colour of the gums yielded is light and uniform. Followed by this, the gingival tissue heals by secondary intention. Patient is recalled for follow up.

SCALPEL  TECHNIQUE:

After administration of the local anaesthetic agent, blade is used, in order to remove the pigmented layer. Haemorrhage control is taken into account during the entire procedure. After removal of the pigmented layer, periodontal dressing is given. Patient is prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and mouth wash. Patient is recalled for follow up.

Laser Ablation is always superior to Scalpel technique as, in Laser Ablation patient discomfort and trauma to the gingival tissues is reduced. Also, it is more effective.
