WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A DENTAL IMPLANT ?

The major benefit of an implant is that, it preserves the jawbone, prevents its resorption, restores the missing tooth and the supporting structures, replaces it in such a way that it almost serves like a natural tooth, in form and function. It also retains your natural face shape and smile.  An Orthopaedic Surgeon in Sweden discovered the phenomenon of Osseointegration of titanium plates. Osseointegration is a connection between living bone and the surface of a load carrying implant, which occurs also when a Dental Implant is placed.

WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS OF A DENTAL IMPLANT?

The indications are restoring dental aesthetics and functions like mastication and speech, space maintenance and bone preservation after tooth loss.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

Prior to the treatment, thorough clinical and radiological evaluation is done. Medical history is recorded, and the risks and complications are ruled out. In case of severe bone atrophy, bone grafting is done, as/if instructed by the Doctor. The steps included in the surgical procedure are:

1 )Oral soft tissue reflection. An alternative is a flapless procedure.

2) Drilling of the bone.

3) Placement of the implant.

4) Healthy gingival tissue is adapted around the healing abutment.

The surgery could be single stage or a two stage surgery.

The prosthetic phase will begin once the integration of the implant is confirmed. A temporary prosthesis might be given till then.

When is the surgical removal of wisdom tooth indicated?

Failure of complete eruption of the wisdom tooth, especially in the lower jaw is an extremely frequent occurrence. The treatment includes the surgical removal of the wisdom tooth, also known as the third molar surgery.

What are the indications for Third Molar Surgery?

  • Insufficient space in the jaw for the eruption of third molar.
  • Unerupted third molar, causing pain due to the pressure it exerts.
  • Partial eruption of the third molar, which becomes a site for food lodgement.
  • Grossly decayed third molars.
  • When the third molar is anomalously placed and at times, causes decay of the adjacent tooth. For example: Mesioangular/ Distoangular/ horizontally placed third molars.
  • Periapical Pathology. For example: a cyst/ granuloma.

In all these circumstances, there are signs of pain, swelling and/or inflammation, and hence surgical removal is indicated.

How is the third molar surgically extracted?

Before surgical extraction, a thorough clinical and radiological diagnosis is done. The Medical History of the patient is recorded and required measures are taken.  After proper isolation, anaesthetic agent is employed. In most of the cases, local anaesthesia suffices, but in rare cases, general anaesthesia might be required. This is followed by Flap elevation, creating a gutter by Bone Cutting, elevation of the third molar, Socket compression and lastly taking sutures, which is required in almost all cases. Medications are prescribed and patient is recalled for suture removal and follow-up. During the entire surgical procedure, sterilization is to be maintained. We, at Teeth Centre Centre, Satellite, Ahmedabad follow the 7 STEP STERILIZATION PROTOCOL which prevents contamination of all sorts. Also, we have a team of Doctors specializing in surgical removal of tooth and following standards used in countries like the USA, Germany etc.
