Snoring happens when air can’t move freely through your nose and throat during sleep. This makes the surrounding tissues vibrate, which produces the snoring sound.
There can be many reasons for snoring. Few of them have been listed below-
- Physiologic reasons – people who snore often have too much throat and nasal tissue or “floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate, producing the snoring sound.
- Age– throat becomes narrower and muscle tone decreases with age
- Sleeping posture- Tongue is in relaxed state and falls back into the neck while sleeping on your back. This can cause suffocated breathing and result in snoring. Changing sleeping positing can help.
- Being overweight– excess fat around the neck and throat can induce snoring. Exercise and weight loss can help
- Nasal and sinus problems– blocked airways and stuff nose hinders a smooth and effortless breathing and causes snoring
- Alcohol, smoking and certain medicines
Options for treating snoring-
- Home remedies
- Clear nasal passages: clear stuffy nose before going to bed. Use saline or nasal decongestants. One may also use nasal strips to help making breathing easy
- Improve sleeping posture: sleep on your side instead of sleeping on back
- Limit alcohol and smoking before bed
- Regular exercise to maintain weight
- Get a proper sound sleep of 8 hours every day
- Dental treatments
- Use of oral appliances: oral appliances and customized and fitted into your mouth by dental practitioners. They are designed to adjust the position of your jaw; tongue and soft palate to keep your air passage open. They are removable and the patient only has to wear them while sleeping.
- Medical treatments
- Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): The patient is made to wear a mask while sleeping. Continuous, direct and pressurized air is supplied to the patient via the mask. this method is most commonly used for patients with OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea)
- Surgical approach
