HOW IS COMPUTER GUIDED DENTAL IMPLANT SURGERY SUPERIOR TO CONVENTIONAL SURGERY?

Patients in current technological era demand dental implant treatments that are less invasive and more rapid. In the Dental sector, demand for computer aided dental implant treatments has reached its peak. Conventional methods of carrying out dental implant treatments are bygones, and are replaced by advanced methods.

What is computer aided dental implant surgery?

computer guided surgery ahmedabadA 3D scan of the patient’s oral cavity is created; a virtual representation of the surgery can be viewed through these scans. The models of the patient’s mouth and the 3D scans assist the surgeon to carry out the dental implant procedure in a way that is precise and less invasive. Guided dental implant surgery helps to locate the vital structures like nerves, sinuses, bone etc.

Computer aided surgery VS. Conventional surgery:

COMPUTER AIDED IMPLANT SURGERY CONVENTIONAL SURGERY
Less invasive, smaller incisions. More invasive.
Precise placement of implants, even when no landmarks are present. Less precision as compared to computer aided surgery.
Less bleeding, pain and post operative swelling, hence rapid recovery. Comparatively increased bleeding, pain, swelling; slow recovery.
Easy to locate vital structures. Might pose a difficulty.
Important tool of communication between the dentist who will carry out the restoration and the surgeon. Communication is comparatively difficult.

WHAT IS GUM DEPIGMENTATION?

Gum depigmentation, falling under the Cosmetic Dentistry branch, is removal of black spots or patches from the gum surface caused by melanin or any other factor, by laser or surgical technique.

What causes gum pigmentation?

In the gingival epithelium, cells called melanocytes reside.  The rate of melanocytes is different in different individuals. These cells are responsible for melanin pigmentation, which is seen as black spots or patches on the gum surface.  Certain medications could also result in pigmentation.

What are the techniques employed in Gum Depigmentation?

Basically, two main techniques are employed: Laser ablation and Surgical technique.

LASER ABLATION:

Dental laser targets the melanocytes and ablates them, which results in a reduced production of melanin by melanocytes in the basal layer of gingival epithelium. The colour of the gums yielded is light and uniform. Followed by this, the gingival tissue heals by secondary intention. Patient is recalled for follow up.

SCALPEL  TECHNIQUE:

After administration of the local anaesthetic agent, blade is used, in order to remove the pigmented layer. Haemorrhage control is taken into account during the entire procedure. After removal of the pigmented layer, periodontal dressing is given. Patient is prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and mouth wash. Patient is recalled for follow up.

Laser Ablation is always superior to Scalpel technique as, in Laser Ablation patient discomfort and trauma to the gingival tissues is reduced. Also, it is more effective.

HOW ARE EMAX ( ALL-CERAMIC) CROWNS AESTHETICALLY SUPERIOR TO PORCELAIN FUSED TO METAL (PFM) CROWNS?

The most commonly all ceramic crowns employed in prosthodontics are Emax and Zirconia crowns.

Emax consists of Lithium disilicate system.

What are the disadvantages of PFM crowns?

The aesthetic aspect is questionable because it consists of a metal framework masked by opaque porcelain, which hardly resembles the natural tooth shade. Unaesthetic grey lines might become visible under the gumline, thus deteriorating the aesthetic aspect.

Why Emax crowns?

Emax crowns are aesthetically superior and durable. These crowns can be used in the following:

  1. In case of stained teeth. Emax crowns are translucent and possess fracture and chipping resistant properties.
  2. Emax crowns consists of Lithium Disilicate and therefore highly durable.
  3. Conservation of tooth structure is another advantage. These crowns possessing excellent strength, can be prepared in thin sections which ensure minimal tooth reduction. Therefore function, along with aesthetics, is taken care of.
  4. Emax system can also be used for fabrication onlays, inlays, veneers as well as short span bridges in anterior teeth replacement.
  5. Because these crowns do not incorporate metal, the unaesthetic grey lines will not be visible surrounding the gumlines and hence will blend with natural teeth.
