What causes stains?
Extrinsic Stains:
Extrinsic tooth stains are typically caused by tobacco use, smoking or by regularly drinking coffee, tea, wine or cola drinks.

Intrinsic Stains:
– As aging occurs, the outermost layer of the tooth, i.e. the enamel wears off and dentinal layer, which is yellowish in colour, exposes itself causing yellow teeth.
– Clenching/grinding of the teeth, known as Bruxism cause micro- cracking of the teeth. These cracks readily absorb stains and cause stain internalization.
– Genetic disorders like Amelogenesis Imperfecta or Dentinogenesis Imperfecta which causes abnormal formation of enamel and dentin and hence abnormal shade of the teeth.
– Flourosis of the teeth which occurs due to hypo mineralization and an excessive intake of fluoride during enamel formation. Initially white spots are seen, which at an advanced stage causes brown staining.
– Dental trauma that might have caused internal resorption or necrosis of the pulpal tissue, resulting in discoloration of the tooth.

What are the contraindications of bleaching?
– Hypersensitive teeth
– Allergy to hydrogen peroxide
– Unrealistic patient expectations
– Pregnant/lactating women
– Severe gum recession
– Untreated periapical pathology

Basically, teeth whitening in Ahmedabad could be done by In- office bleach or At-home bleach. Bleaching solution contain hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide or sodium perborate in varying concentrations. Hydrogen peroxide is the most effective bleaching agent. Before undergoing best teeth whitening treatment; the doctor evaluates the patients for allergies, teeth hypersensitivity, state of the oral soft and hard tissues etc. Shade guides are used which varies from two to seven shades.

In-Office Bleach:
In- office bleach is carried out by a dental professional. Before starting the procedure, it is advisable to carry out scaling and polishing. Then, the gums are covered with a protective layer, in order to prevent the gums from chemical burns. Followed by this, the bleaching agent is applied onto the tooth surfaces and left undisturbed for a specific time period, depending on the concentration of the bleaching agent in the gel. The maxillary/upper and mandibular/lower teeth could be bleached simultaneously or maxillary teeth can be bleached followed by mandibular teeth. Bleaching agent in a gel form is recommended in order to prevent the dehydration of teeth.
In Zoom whitening procedure in Ahmedabad, bleaching gel is applied as well as laser bleaching is used. But according to a study in 2007, the procedure is equivalent to chemical bleaching solely; therefore unnecessary exposure to laser bleaching is not recommended.

VENEERS:

Veneers are the trendiest, most effective, instant and pain free cosmetic elucidation for repairing and transforming broken and appalling teeth into a gorgeous, dazzling white smile.
The impact of yellow, broken or misshapen teeth can make one look years older than their actual age. Teeth veneers have anti-aging effects and so after getting veneers, and having all the embarrassing and appalling traits eliminated and beautified from their faces, the patients axiomatically look and feel much younger. Healthy teeth support and uplift the facial muscles, skin, and lips. As we age, our teeth go through many wear and tear processes and are grounded down to a certain extent. As a result, skin and lips shrink and wrinkle. Veneers give a new life to the facial skin and lips, and giving an instant ‘dentofacial uplift’. So veneers not only fix your beautiful smile but also works magic on your face and sheds years from your actual age.
Most celebrities and models attain their perfect star-studded, ‘too die for’ smiles with the help of veneers.

WHAT ARE VENEERS?
Veneers are custom made, wafer-thin layers of tooth-coloured material placed on the front surface of a chipped, stained, abnormally shaped or crooked tooth to improve the colour, shade, size and overall appearance of the tooth and to protect the tooth from damage.
Some dentists refer veneers as ‘instant orthodontics’. Veneers don’t need braces and retainers or years of waiting to correct your smile. Veneers are a blessing for patients who are dissatisfied with their smiles. Veneers can do wonders by blending with your natural teeth and showing off a natural-looking, radiant and sparkling smile.

TYPES OF VENEERS:
The 3 most popular types of veneers are:

Porcelain Veneers:
Porcelain veneers are most widely accepted and used veneers. Porcelain itself is a brittle material, although when bonded onto a tooth surface, it can get very strong and tough. Porcelain veneers are made from high quality ceramic; each one is especially customized and fabricated to perfectly fit each tooth, giving flawless and natural look. Minimal amount of tooth preparation is required. They render a more natural tooth like appearance due to the translucent hue which resembles that of enamel.  Being highly durable, they are known to last up to 10-15 years without any need for replacement.  With proper care, they can live up to a lifetime also. Porcelain veneers are impervious to staining and discolorations.

Zirconia Veneers:
These are usually indicated for patients with severely damaged or broken and deeply decayed teeth. In these cases, a lot of tooth structure has already been destroyed and porcelain or composite resin does not have sufficient support to hold on to. Zirconia veneers are much stronger than the traditional porcelain veneers but less aesthetic pleasing, hence they are mostly placed on posterior teeth because they can tolerate the occlusive forces without breakage.

Composite Veneers:
Composite veneers are a cost efficient alternate to conventional porcelain veneers. Composite veneers also have the potential to match and mirror the exact shade of the natural teeth, to yield a sparkling pearly white smile. Minimal amount of tooth preparation is required for composite build-up, so this is conservative approach; scarifying less amount of natural tooth structure and the end results are stunning. However they are not as long lasting as porcelain veneers due to the material used and are known to discolour and chip off at times.

WHEN SHOULD I CONSIDER GETTING A VENEER?
Discoloured/stained teeth:
There can be many reasons for teeth discolouration. Most common reasons are tea, coffee consumption. Red wine also leaves stains on the teeth. Certain mouth washes leave our teeth stained. Smoking leaves very nasty and stubborn stains. Excessive amount of fluoride in water leaves yellow- brown patches on teeth. Certain systematic conditions can also stain our teeth. Discolorations are also age related.
We cannot change our lifestyle and we cannot always protect our teeth from staining.
Veneers work like magic for such cases. The best part, porcelain veneers are impervious to staining! So you’ll never have to worry about seeing them getting them dull and discolored ever again.

Crooked teeth:
In earlier days, braces were the only option to treat misaligned teeth. Braces required years placement of uncomfortable wires and brackets and frequent dental visits, followed by years of assessments and follow-ups. With recent developments in the field of dentistry, veneers have come up as the perfect ‘quick fix’ solution for treating crooked teeth.
Although not every orthodontic defect can be corrected with veneers, some require special attention from your orthodontist. Talk to your doctor to know which treatment is best suited for you.

Chipped or cracked teeth:
Cracked or broken tooth can make the tooth sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages. Crack lines can conveniently be concealed and fixed with the help of veneers. A single veneer or a set of multiple veneers are placed onto the tooth surface to rectify this defect and give a natural looking smile with perfect aesthetics

Small teeth or Gap between teeth
While braces can rectify and harmonise your alignment and occlusion, it still fails to correct anomalies related to the size, shape and colour of the teeth. Veneers are best option in such cases.

Gummy smile
A gummy smile is one that shows more gum than is usual visible. Veneers are relatively non-invasive, and can give good results right away.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT:

In your first appointment, Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Pankti Patel will perform a thorough examination of your oral cavity and take photographs for records. The perfect Biomimetic Restoration treatment plan will be penned down for you after a meticulous evaluation and analysis for your case. The doctor will explain and discus the best suited treatment plan with you.
In order to fabricate the perfect fitted veneer for you, Dr. Pankti Patel will need to remove a morsel of your tooth structure. Next, an impression will be taken to customise the veneer. Temporary veneer may be placed in between the appointments if necessary.
Permanent veneers are placed onto the tooth surface in the final appointment. Occlusion and bite is checked to confirm that the veneers are comfortable, nicely fitted and looking aesthetically pleasing

FAQs:-

A:
Care for them just like you do for your natural teeth. Veneers don’t need any kind of special attention. Just brush and floss regularly and you’re good.
Q: Is the treatment painful?
A: No, the treatment isn’t painful at all. Some patients may experience slight sensitivity during tooth preparation. Local anaesthesia maybe given for such cases to eliminate any inconvenience.
Q: Are veneers permanent?
A: Care is a very important factor for long life of veneers. When maintained well, they last for around 10 years. However, like natural teeth, day-to-day wear and tear can result in gradual degradation of veneers.
Q: What points do I consider for Re-veneering?
A: Cost and further mild to moderate shaving of veneered teeth.

What to do if my Tooth Fractures?

A healthy smile is often taken for granted until dental issues arise. One common dental problem that many people face is tooth fractures. A tooth fracture can range from a minor chip to a severe break, leading to various complications if left untreated.

Causes of Tooth Fractures:

  • Tooth fractures can result from various causes, and understanding these can help you take preventive measures. Some common causes include:
  • Trauma: Accidents, falls, or sports-related injuries can lead to tooth fractures. A direct impact on the mouth is a common trigger.
  • Biting on hard objects: Chewing on hard substances like ice, pens, or nuts can cause teeth to crack or chip.
  • Tooth decay: Untreated cavities can weaken teeth, making them more susceptible to fractures.
  • Bruxism (Teeth grinding): Consistent grinding and clenching of teeth, often during sleep, can lead to fractures over time.
  • Weakened enamel: Enamel erosion due to acidic foods, beverages, or certain medical conditions can make teeth more fragile.

Types of Tooth Fractures:

Tooth fractures are classified into several types, each requiring specific treatment approaches:

  • Minor Chips: Small, shallow chips on the tooth’s surface can often be smoothed out or filled by a dentist with dental bonding material.
  • Cracked Tooth: A crack extends from the chewing surface towards the root, causing discomfort and sensitivity. Treatment may involve a crown to protect the tooth from further damage.
  • Fractured Cusp: A piece of the tooth’s chewing surface breaks off. A dental crown is usually recommended to restore the tooth’s function and appearance.
  • Vertical Root Fracture: A crack starts in the root of the tooth and extends upward. In some cases, extraction may be necessary, while in others, endodontic surgery might be performed to save the tooth.
  • Split Tooth: This occurs when a tooth is split into distinct segments. Depending on the severity, the dentist may attempt to save a portion of the tooth through root canal therapy or recommend extraction followed by tooth replacement options like implants or bridges.

Early detection of tooth fractures is crucial for timely treatment. Some common signs and symptoms of tooth fractures include:

  • Sharp pain while biting or chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Swelling or gum inflammation around the affected tooth
  • Pain when releasing biting pressure
  • Visible cracks, chips, or fractures

Prevention:

Preventing tooth fractures is always better than dealing with their consequences. Here are some practical tips for avoiding tooth fractures:

  • Wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports.
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects or ice.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent decay and enamel erosion.
  • Address bruxism with a night guard to protect your teeth while sleeping.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.

Treatment Options for Tooth Fractures:

The appropriate treatment for a tooth fracture depends on the type and extent of the damage. Some common treatment options include:

  • Dental Bonding: For minor chips, dental bonding involves applying a tooth-colored resin to the affected area, restoring the tooth’s appearance.
  • Dental Veneers: Thin porcelain shells that cover the front surface of the tooth can effectively hide minor fractures and improve aesthetics.
  • Dental Crowns: Crowns are used to cover and protect damaged teeth, providing strength and support while resembling natural teeth.
  • Root Canal Therapy: When the fracture extends into the pulp (inner part) of the tooth, a root canal procedure may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue and seal the tooth, preventing infection.
  • Extraction: Severely fractured teeth that cannot be saved may need to be extracted to prevent infection and alleviate pain.
  • Dental Implants and Bridges: For extracted teeth, dental implants or bridges can replace the missing tooth, restoring functionality and aesthetics.

At Teeth Care Centre, Dr. Pankti Patel, the best dentist in Ahmedabad, not only does your complete oral evaluation but also guides you on the ways you can prevent tooth fractures by giving you honest advice on what needs to be done.

Tooth fractures are a common dental issue that can significantly impact oral health and quality of life. Regular dental check-ups at best dental clinic in India, maintaining good oral hygiene, and avoiding habits like teeth grinding or chewing on hard objects can reduce the risk of tooth fractures. If you experience any symptoms of a tooth fracture, such as pain, sensitivity, or visible damage, it is crucial to seek prompt dental care.
