Periodontitis can cause teeth to loosen or lead to tooth loss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Causes Periodontitis?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bacteria in the mouth infect tissue surrounding the tooth, causing inflammation around the tooth leading to periodontal disease. When bacteria stay on the teeth long enough, they form a film called plaque, which eventually hardens to tartar, also called calculus. Tartar build-up can spread below the gum line, which makes the teeth harder to clean. Then, only a dental health professional can remove the tartar and stop the periodontal disease process.<\/p>\n<p>Other Factors can contribute to periodontal disease. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Smoking<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Diabetes<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Poor oral hygiene<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Stress<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Heredity<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Crooked teeth<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Underlying immune-deficiencies\u2014e.g., AIDS<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Fillings that have become defective<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Taking medications that cause dry mouth<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Bridges that no longer fit properly<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Female hormonal changes, such as with pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Symptoms: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Healthy gums are firm and pale pink and fit snugly around teeth.
